WWE Undisputed Universal Champion Roman Reigns' dominance could have been a distant dream for fans. In a recent interview with Uproxx, Paul Heyman, Reigns' special counsel, revealed that the champion contemplated retirement during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Reigns, immunocompromised due to his past battle with leukemia, opted to step away from the ring in early 2020. This decision, as Heyman explained, solidified into a belief that he was done with wrestling altogether.
"He considered himself retired. He wasn't coming back," Heyman stated.
This revelation adds a surprising layer to Reigns' current reign, which began with his SummerSlam 2020 return and subsequent championship victory. Heyman himself, then Executive Director of Raw, witnessed the desire for Reigns' return within WWE.
"Every week I heard all the SmackDown writers and producers and personnel saying, 'God, I just wish Roman would come back,'" Heyman recalled. "And I would ask, has anybody talked to him? Yeah, he says he's retired. He's not coming back. No way..."
Reigns' comeback, according to Heyman, is nothing short of a "miracle." Since then, he's established himself as a dominant champion, spearheaded the Bloodline storyline, and shattered championship reign records.
Roman Reigns is now all set to pull off a double duty at WrestleMania. On Saturday, he'll team with The Rock against Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins. Then, on Sunday, he'll defend his title against Cody in a singles match.
