Indian Box Office Went Up By 10 Percent In 2023 As Compared To 2022
Mumbai, January 1 - The Indian box office in 2023 witnessed a rise of approximately 8% as compared to 2022. It was a year when Bollywood was back on top and dominated the overall Indian market, thanks to some of the biggest blockbusters of all time in the form of Pathaan, Jawan, Animal, and Gadar 2, among others.
In 2023, the films across languages grossed an estimated 11400 crores (9700 crores net) at the Indian box office, while in 2022, it was an estimated 10550 crores gross (8850 crores net) collection. The Hindi language has had a sharp rise of approximately 45% while the Telugu language mostly remained flat and Tamil witnessed an upward trend but Kannada and Malayalam cinema scored a decline.
Have a look at the language-wise break-down of the collection at the Indian box office in 2023 -
Hindi - As said, it was an unforgettable year for Hindi cinema scoring an estimated 4800 crores net collection in 2023, as compared to 3300 crores in 2022. In 2023, Bollywood scored its first 500 crores net grosser in the form of "Pathaan", before "Gadar 2", "Jawan", and "Animal" joined the party in this prestigious club. Apart from the four 500+ crore net grossers, there were 10 other films, including Salaar which minted over 100+ crores net.
Telugu - It wasn't a great year for Telugu cinema in terms of delivering a big blockbuster. The highest-grossing film in Telugu came in the last month of the year in the form "Salaar" which has minted over 200 crores net. Overall, the Telugu language contributed an estimated 1860 crores net in 2023 as compared to 1900 crores in 2022. 2024, however, could be the break-out year for Telugu cinema as almost all the top stars will be in action.
Tamil - The Tamil cinema had good success in 2023 with 5 films topping 100+ crores net collection, and two of them ("Leo" and "Jailer") went on to top 200+ crores net. Overall, the Tamil language scored an estimated 1600+ crores net collection in 2023, as compared to 1560 crores in 2022. Just like Telugu, Kollywood could also witness a major turnaround in 2024 with multiple blockbusters lined up for the release.
Malayalam and Kannada - The Kannada cinema witnessed a major decline in collection in 2023 in the absence of major hits. Last year, there were "Kantara" and "KGF 2" which made a large contribution, but in 2023, things were the opposite, resulting in, the Kannada language scoring an estimated 200 crores net, compared to 650 crores in 2022.
The Malayalam cinema had a break-out success in 2023 in the form of "2018 Movie" along with some other box office hits but it failed to cross 2022 in terms of overall collection. In 2023, the Malayalam language contributed an estimated 390 crores net while the same was 470 crores in 2022.
Other languages - Apart from the aforementioned languages, English, Marathi, Punjabi, Gujarati, and Bengali contributed an estimated 850 crores net collection in 2023, as compared to 960 crores in 2022.
