The Film Federation of India has selected Lijo Jose Pellissery's Malayalam movie "Jallikattu" as the country's official representative in the 93rd Academy Awards' best international feature category. A 14-member committee of the FDI, that picks the Indian nominee every year, made the announcement on Wednesday.

The story of the film revolves around a tamed buffalo that escapes from a slaughterhouse in a hilly remote village of Kerala's Idduki district. To hunt down the buffalo, the whole village gathers which exposes deep societal fissures in the process.

India has been sending entries to the Oscars' erstwhile foreign-language category since 1957 and has been nominated three times, for "Mother India" (1958), "Salaam Bombay!" (1989), and "Lagaan" (2002).
The 93rd Academy Awards that were earlier scheduled to be held in February, will now take place on April 25, 2021, in Los Angeles after being pushed back by two months due to the coronavirus pandemic.
