Cannes, May 19 - Hollywood action star was honored with a prestigious Palme d'Or award at the "Top Gun: Maverick" premiere at the Cannes Film Festival 2022. The movie also received a 5-minutes standing ovation from the crowd at the premiere.
"An incredible evening and an incredible time. Just to see everyone's faces. It's been 36 years since Top Gun and we had to hold this for two years because of the pandemic", said Cruise to the crowd (via Deadline).
Prior to receiving the Palme d'Or, the blockbuster actor was given a tribute reel before the film played. As a prelude, French fighter jets took the sky streaming blue, white, and red smoke. The squadron did a second pass before the Top Gun: Maverick star took the stage at the Palais.
"Thank you Paramount people, this was a dream to be here with you. I'm going to take this all in and I'm never going to forget this evening. Thank you for being here. We're here for you. I make these movies for all of you. I'm of you in every meeting, in every moment. Especially in Cannes, you love movies", he added.
"Top Gun: Maverick" has been one of the top-rated movies with a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from over 110 reviews. It is lauded as one of the most satisfying sequels ever made. Scheduled to release on May 27th, it should come as no surprise if it opens to Cruise's biggest weekend ever, surpassing the $169.3M WW start of "The Mummy".
