Tom Cruise's 'Top Gun Maverick' Flies Past $500 Million At The North American Box Office

Los Angeles, June 26 - Tom Cruise is just a few steps away to get his first $1 billion grosser at the worldwide box office in the form of Top Gun Maverick. While the Hollywood industry is awaiting the inevitable target of the $1 billion mark, the Paramount movie has crossed yet another milestone domestically (North America).
The sequel to 1986's film has flown past the $500 million mark at the domestic box office, becoming only the second movie after "Spider-Man: No Way Home" to do so during the covid-19 pandemic. It is also the biggest Hollywood movie domestically in 2022, having overtaken Marvel/Disney's "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness".
"Top Gun 2" has projected to score $30 million in its 5th week, which will include it in the all-time top 3 Hollywood films in the fifth week at the domestic box office. The Hollywood trade experts are predicting its lifetime domestic run to finish over $600 million while worldwide with $1.10 billion. It will become only the second film worldwide to reach the $1 billion mark during the pandemic. "No Way Home" is currently the biggest movie with a $1.89 billion worldwide gross.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the movie stars Tom Cruise as Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell reprising his role from the original, alongside Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, and Val Kilmer.
Set 36 years after its predecessor, it follows Maverick's reluctant return to the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program, where he must confront his past as he trains a group of younger aviators, among them the son of Maverick's deceased best friend.
