Los Angeles, September 5 - Tom Cruise's biggest film is now the 5th highest-grossing film of all time in the history of the North American box office. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the action thriller has topped $700 million as well as crossed Marvel Studios' Black Panther as the fifth biggest North American grosser.
According to Variety, "Top Gun 2" returned to the top of box office charts over Labor Day weekend, adding $7.9 million between Friday and Monday and bringing ticket sales to $701 million. It is now ahead of the Marvel blockbuster "Black Panther's" $700.4 million and is only the 6th film ever to top $700 million at the North American box office.
According to Paramount, the sequel to Cruise's 1986 blockbuster film is the only film to ever be No. 1 at the domestic box office for both Memorial Day and Labor Day holidays.
"It's without a doubt, that 'Top Gun: Maverick' is a true cultural touchstone embodying the power of the cinematic experience. As we celebrate this enormous achievement and the film's massive impact, we want to extend our gratitude to Tom Cruise, our filmmakers and cast, Paramount's marketing and distribution teams, and the legions of both new and longtime 'Top Gun' fans who keep turning out to enjoy this remarkable movie", said Brian Robbins, president, and CEO of Paramount Pictures.
The film is most likely to finish as the 5th biggest blockbuster in North America as the next highest-grossing movie is "Avatar" with $760 million. Globally, "Top Gun 2" stands as the 12th-biggest movie with $1.44 billion, but it's fast approaching 11th place, which currently is secure with Disney's "Frozen II" with $1.450 billion.
