Los Angeles, April 30 - The first film of 2023 to cross the coveted $1 billion milestone is here!
Universal, Illumination, and Nintendo's video game adaptation animated movie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has officially become crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office through the 4th Sunday.
"Super Mario Bros." is the first animated movie and the 5th overall to cross the $1 billion mark in the post-pandemic era, after "Spider-Man: No Way Home", "Top Gun: Maverick", "Jurassic World Dominion", and "Avatar: The Way of Water".
It has grossed $490 million in North America and $532 million at the international box office so far, becoming the only video game movie to top $1 billion globally. Overall, the "Super Mario Bros. Movie" is the 52nd film of all time to breach this box office milestone.
The top 10 markets for the movie are as follows - 1. North America ($490M), 2. Mexico ($73.2M), 3. The UK ($56.4M), 4. Germany ($43.9M), 5. France ($40.8M), 6. Australia ($31.1M), 7. Spain ($22M), 8. China ($21M), 9. Brazil ($20.6M), 10. Italy ($19.6M).
Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the movie was released on April 5 worldwide and took a gigantic opening of $375+ million over the 5-day weekend, the biggest of 2023 so far. It is currently the 4th highest-grossing movie in the post covid era and the 49th biggest-grosser of all time.
The film follows the Brooklyn-based plumbers known as Mario and Luigi, who are sucked into the mystical Mushroom Kingdom. Along with Princess Peach, they prepare to stop the mighty Bowser from total domination.
