The 'Super Mario Bros. Movie' Breaks 10 Major Box Office Records

Los Angeles, April 10 - The video game feature adaptation is the new box office king as The Super Mario Bros. Movie exceeded all the expectations and shattered records at the domestic as well as the overseas box office.
The Illumination, Universal Pictures, and Nintendo's animated adventure opened to a joe-dropping $375.60 million over the 5-day Easter weekend at the global box office, including $204.6 million domestically (North America) and $170.9 million overseas. The worldwide debut is $100+ million more than the initial projection, which speaks about how gigantic the actual numbers are.
It is the second film based on the Super Mario game and it cost around $100 million to hit the big screens. The live-action version, "Super Mario Bros" (1993) turned out to be an epic disaster so there was added pressure on the animated feature to deliver and it didn't disappoint at all.
Despite not being liked by critics, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" shattered many box office records in its opening weekend, thanks to the tremendous response from not only the family audiences but also from general moviegoers who awarded the film an "A" CinemaScore.
