Los Angeles, February 15 - The covid-19 pandemic spared no one, including the Hollywood film industry which has a huge influence over worldwide audiences. During this health crisis, the theatrical exhibition industry was on the verge of collapse and there were only a few who were thinking about its revival.
Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise had his "Top Gun: Maverick" ready for release for a long and there were a lot of lucrative offers from OTT platforms to sell the movie for its direct digital release. However, it was Cruise's firm belief in the big screen cinema that made him hold the release of "Top Gun 2" until normalcy returned and when it was released in theaters, it broke several box office records and became the biggest-grossing movie ever for the actor.
There were several reports about theater owners thanking Cruise for his timely decision to bring "Top Gun 2" only to theaters. And now, the Oscar-winner and one of the most commercially successful directors of all time, Steven Spielberg has lauded Cruise for his brave move regarding "Top Gun 2's" release.
"The Fabelmans" director caught up with Cruise at the Oscar nominees luncheon yesterday and their encounter was caught in a video that has now gone viral. Spielberg congratulated Cruise on hitting the milestone last year by bringing back audiences to the theaters.
Spielberg seemingly heard crediting Cruise for "saving Hollywood" with his film's theatrical release. "And, you might have saved theatrical distribution. Seriously. 'Maverick' might have saved the entire theatrical industry", he added.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, "Top Gun 2" grossed over $1.48 billion at the global box office and a lot of credit must go to Cruise for this overwhelming response. He had even said in an interview that he was with theater owners and understand what they were going through.
