Los Angeles, November 26 - The long-awaited sequel to James Cameron's "Avatar" - Avatar: The Way of Water is set for more than the double opening of the first film at the domestic (North America) box office.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the sci-fi epic is tracking at least $150 million - $170 million in the opening weekend in North America. These are conservative estimates and may go higher. The first "Avatar" movie, released in 2009, opened to $77 million and later enjoyed extraordinary legs to project a $785 million lifetime total (re-release included).
One of the reasons for the conservative opening weekend projections of "Avatar: The Way of Water" is that it is 30 minutes longer than the first movie with a runtime of 3 hours and 10 minutes, meaning the sequel will have fewer showtimes per day.
"Avatar 2" is not the only Hollywood movie with longer runtime. The second and third highest-grossing movies of all time, "Avengers: Endgame" ($2.79 billion) and Cameron's "Titanic" ($2.2 billion) are more than 3 hours long. As reported earlier, "Avatar 2" is eyeing a minimum $2 billion worldwide gross collection in its lifetime run.
Produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, and distributed by Disney, "Avatar 2" stars Zoe Saldaña, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, and Stephen Lang, among others in key roles. The movie is scheduled to release on December 16 in over 100 languages worldwide in multiple formats.
