Mumbai, November 15 - The proven Bollywood filmmaker, Sooraj Barjatya is once again paving the way for bringing family audiences back to theaters amid the continued disappointment within the film industry with his latest flick Uunchai.
The adventure friendship drama film was released on November 11 on comparatively limited screens of less than 500, however, the makers could have easily booked around 2500 screens. It is Barjatya's tried and tested release formula which has worked wonders in the past.
At a time when many low to mid-budget films are falling drastically, "Uunchai" took the opening of 1.81 crores net, which is not big by Bollywood standards but much better for its release size. Thanks to the super positive reviews and word of mouth, "Uunchai" witnessed a super solid jump over the weekend to score 10.16 crores net in the first three days.
The opening weekend total of "Uunchai" is higher than the lifetime total of some of the recent low to mid-budget Bollywood films. After more than a promising opening weekend, the eyes were on the crucial make-or-break Monday test and it passed it with flying colors by scoring more than the opening day numbers with 1.88 crores net.
The trend for "Uunchai" at the box office remained positive throughout the first week and it takes this momentum into the next week when more screens have been added despite the arrival of Ajay Devgn's much-awaited suspense thriller "Drishyam 2". The current worldwide collection of "Uunchai" is around 30 crores gross, including approx. 5.50 crores overseas in 9 days.
"Uunchai" is a much-needed boost to Bollywood which has been going through a dry spell at the box office as far as low and mid-budget films are concerned. Apart from Vivek Agnihotri's "The Kashmir Files", no other non-higher budget films could spell the magic at the box office post the covid-19 pandemic.
The worldwide theatrical share of "Uunchai" is around 20 crores, which is not looking a tough ask for it to achieve. Made with a budget of around 45 crores, "Uunchai" is very much on track to become a rare hit for the industry and fetch a good amount of profit for the makers from theatrical and non-theatrical revenue.
Produced by Rajshri Productions, the film revolves around three aged friends, who take a trek to the Everest Base Camp, to fulfill their fourth friend's last wish. A simple trek turns out to be a personal, emotional, and spiritual journey as they battle their physical limitations and discover the true meaning of freedom. It stars an ensemble cast of Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Danny Denzongpa, Parineeti Chopra, Neena Gupta, and Sarika in key roles.
