'Spider-Man: No Way Home' Becomes The Highest-Grossing Film Of All Time In Mexico

Mumbai, January 18 - Marvel/Sony Pictures' "Spider-Man: No Way Home" is setting new benchmarks at the domestic as well as the international box office. The superhero movie is heading towards a $1 billion overseas box office, that too without a single penny from China. ## The Tom Holland-fronted film has so far grossed $926.3 million through 63 international markets and over $700 million domestically (North America), pushing global cume to $1.62 billion. It is currently the 8th highest-grossing film of all time at the worldwide box office and will grab the 6th spot in the list by the end of next weekend.## Meanwhile, "No Way Home" has become the highest-grossing film of all time in Mexico with $72 million. In Brazil, it is the second highest-grossing film ever with $50.4 million, so in Central America ($12.6M) and Ecuador ($7.9M).## In North America, "Spider-Man: No Way Home" becomes the 4th highest-grossing film ever. After the end of the 5th weekend, it was the 5th biggest-grosser there with $698.7 million and became 4th biggest on Monday by crossing Marvel Studios' "Black Panther" ($700.06 million). ## The Jon Watts-directed is likely to finish with $1.75 billion globally. The number could go higher if it gets a release date in China, which is the biggest movie market in the world. However, the movie has done its job and whatever comes further is a bonus. Oscar Isaac Is Marvel's Newest Superhero With 'Moon Knight'

Los Angeles, Jan 18 (IANS) Marvel Studios has unveiled the first trailer for its Disney Plus series 'Moon Knight' and it has a new superhero played by actor Oscar Isaac.## The teaser was unveiled on Monday night, officially launching the 2022 slate for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, reports variety.com.## In 'Moon Knight' premiering on March 30, Isaac plays Marc Spector, a former soldier with a profound case of dissociative identity disorder that manifests as fully distinct individuals. He becomes the conduit for the Egyptian moon god Khonshu, which only further exacerbates Marc's anxiety over his mental illness.## In the trailer, set to Kid Cudi's 'Day an' Night', Marc can't tell the difference between his normal life and his dreams. He plays with a Rubik's cube, unable to fall asleep, only to jump out of bed in a panic with his foot chained to his bed, though he seemingly forgets he was the one who restrained himself the night before. After visiting a museum in ancient Egypt, he sees a vision of Khonshu and later meets Ethan Hawke's villain, a cult leader who encourages Marc to embrace the darkness within himself.## The trailer ends with Marc being enveloped by the Moon Knight costume and a shot of him brutally beating someone up on a bathroom floor.## Unlike all of Marvel Studios' previous series for Disney Plus, which were based on existing characters from the company's pre-2019 feature films, 'Moon Knight' charts a brand new path, with a totally new set of characters and a storyline that has no clear initial connection to the MCU.## Making his Marvel comics debut in 1975, Moon Knight initially had superpowers based on the phases of the moon, but more recent iterations have kept his abilities mortal, aided by sophisticated gadgetry.## That has drawn comics fans to compare the character to the DC Comics superhero Batman.## 'Moon Knight' co-stars Hawke and May Calamawy, while Jeremy Slater serves as creator and head writer, with Mohamed Diab and the team of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead directing.## The show inaugurates Marvel Studios' second year delivering TV series for Disney Plus alongside its feature films. 'Black Panther' Sequel Is On Track For Scheduled Release Despite Delayed Production

Los Angeles, January 15 - Marvel Studios' highly anticipated sequel to "Black Panther" is on track for the scheduled release in November 2022, despite the delayed production. The production of the film got halted due to the injury of British actress, Letitia Wright, who plays Shuri in the film. ## On Friday, Letitia resumed shooting for "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever", almost five months after being injured when a stunt went wrong. At the time of injury in August 2021, it looked she would be resuming work soon but the recovery took longer than the expected time which led to the postponement of the production in November. ## Wright's Princess of Wakanda character is expected to play a bigger part in the blockbuster's sequel. The late Chadwick Boseman led the 2018 film and his role has not been re-cast following his death in 2020. ## While the release dates of 2022 Marvel Movies were already postponed due to the production changes, it was reported that "Black Panther 2" could be further delayed due to Letitia's injury. Los Angeles, Jan 11 (IANS) 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' may be shattering one box-office record after another and generating a healthy Oscar buzz, but there's one award that the Tom Holland-starrer definitely won't be picking up this awards season: a BAFTA, reports 'Variety'.## The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced that the movie won't be considered for any awards after failing to meet "eligibility criteria".## A spokesperson for BAFTA said: "'Spider-Man: No Way Home' did not meet the eligibility criteria for the EE British Academy Film Awards 2022 and therefore did not qualify for entry.## "As outlined in our rulebook, all films must be made available to voting members on BAFTA View prior to Round One voting closing to ensure fairness and parity for all titles, and the film was not made available by the distributor".## Round One closed on January 3. On BAFTA View, there is a 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' page for members' consideration, with a description of the film; however, 'Variety' understands that the film itself was never made available to view. Mumbai, January 10 - Marvel and Sony Pictures' "Spider-Man: No Way Home" is now on the elite list of the highest-grossing films worldwide of all time. With a $1.53 billion global cume, "No Way Home" is now the 8th highest-grossing film of all time. It surpassed "The Avengers" ($1.518B), and "Furious 7" ($1.516B) to break into the list of top 10 worldwide grosser. ## The Tom Holland-fronted superhero film is the biggest grossing title worldwide since "The Lion King" ($1.662 billion) in summer 2019. Peter Dinklage: Don't Try To Recreate 'Game of Thrones'

Los Angeles, Jan 10 (IANS) Actor Peter Dinklage, who played the part of Tyrion Lannister in the hit TV series "Game of Thrones", has warned HBO about the potential pitfalls facing the makers of 'House of the Dragon', the upcoming prequel show.## The 52-year-old actor explained: "I think the trick is not to try to recreate 'Thrones'. If you try to recreate it, that feels like a money grab. With a lot of sequels, the reason for them is that the first one made a lot of money, which is why they aren't as strong.## He added: "But I am excited to watch the 'House of the Dragon', purely as a viewer, not knowing what will happen next".## 'Game of Thrones' came to an end in 2019 and although some viewers were disappointed by the finale, the actor suggested that their frustration was over the top, reports femalefirst.co.uk.## He told The Independent: "People were just mad because nobody wanted it to be over. I know a lot of people were supposedly surprised by the ending, but if you paid attention, the clues were there".## In December, Dinklage called on 'Game of Throne' fans to "move on" from the show's finale. Move on".## He also likened the show's conclusion to a break-up.## He explained: "I think the reason there was some backlash about the ending is because they were angry at us for breaking up with them.## "We were going off the air and they didn't know what to do with their Sunday nights anymore. 'Sing 2' Becomes First $100M Grosser Animation Movie In North America During Covid-Era

Los Angeles, January 9 - Yet another box office milestone is breached during the covid-19 pandemic era. Universal/Illumination's computer-animated musical comedy film, "Sing 2" has become the first animated movie to reach $100 million at the domestic box office (North America) since the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic. ## Directed by Garth Jennings, the sequel to the 2016 film "Sing" breached the $100 million mark on Saturday in just 17 days of its release. This also becomes the first animated film to pass $100 million domestic since Frozen II ($477 million from a $130 million debut) in November 2019. By the end of its 3rd weekend, "Sing 2" will likely stand at $107 million domestically.## Overseas, the Matthew McConaughey/Reese Witherspoon/Scarlett Johansson-led film has earned approx $68 million, pushing its worldwide box office total to $175 million. Kevin Smith Recalls Writing Failed 'Superman' Movie For Ben Affleck

os Angeles, Jan 9 (IANS) Filmmaker Kevin Smith spoke in detail about an unsuccessful attempt to get a 'Superman' movie off the ground with Hollywood star Ben Affleck in the title role.## Smith was the inaugural guest on Yahoo Entertainment's 'The Never-Weres' series, reports variety.com. Both men were coming off the success of 'Mallrats' at the time.## Warner Bros. was in development on a new 'Superman' movie titled 'Superman Reborn', but Smith thought the screenplay was "terrible". That's when Smith pitched his own 'Superman' movie based on 'The Death of Superman' comic series. Smith's script went into development with producer Jon Peters, but the two clashed overcasting.## "I was writing it for Affleck," Smith said.## "Ben was heating up. Like he was there. I think he'd been hired for 'Armageddon'. Affleck, he's a f***ing giant, like he's built like a superhero, built like a giant action figure, particularly with the height. And then he puts on the muscles there too. So in my head and heart, it was always Ben and Michael Rooker".## Smith wanted Affleck for Superman and Rooker for the villainous role of Lex Luther, but Peters had a different idea. The Hollywood producer wanted to cast Sean Penn as Superman, as the actor was hot off an Oscar nomination for Best Actor thanks to his role in the 1995 drama 'Dead Man Walking'.## "(Jon Peters) goes, 'Look in (Penn's) eyes in that movie, he's (got) haunted eyes, the eyes of a killer'", Smith said.## "And I was like, 'Dude, it's Superman. You know, that's not how most people think of Superman. But he wanted to reinvent it. He wanted something gritty, graphic, and grown-up. He essentially wanted like what Zack Snyder eventually did (in 'Man of Steel' 'Batman v Superman' and 'Justice League,' which coincidentally featured Affleck as Batman opposite Henry Cavill's Superman)'".## Tim Burton eventually took over the reins of 'Superman Lives' and set Nicolas Cage to star. Oprah Winfrey Producing Apple Documentary On Sidney Poitier

Los Angeles, Jan 9 (IANS) A documentary about the career and life of the late Sidney Poitier, the first Black man to win an Oscar, the Bahamanian thespian and diplomat, is in production at Apple.## A source close to the project has confirmed to variety.com. Oprah Winfrey is attached as executive producer for the Apple Original Films release.## Apple and Winfrey have been in production on the documentary for more than a year. Poitier's family is participating in the project.## The documentary comes from Harpo Productions and Network Entertainment. Reggie Hudlin will serve as a director. Hudlin's previous directorial credits include 90's films like 'House Party' and 'Boomerang', as well as episodes of TV series like 'The Last O.G.' and 'Black Monday'.## He is also a prolific producer across film and television, serving as a regular executive producer for the NAACP Image Awards since 2013. Hudlin directed the 2019 documentary 'The Black Godfather', which examines the life of music producer Clarence Avant.## Hudlin is also already executive producing two other projects for Apple TV Plus.## He will direct 'Number One on the Call Sheet', a documentary that examines the history of Black leading men in Hollywood. He is attached to a sister documentary about Black leading women, which Shola Lynch is set to direct.## Poitier, an accomplished performer, producer, and director and the first Black winner of the Academy Award for best actor died on Friday at the age of 94.## "To us, Sidney Poitier was not only a brilliant actor, activist, and a man of incredible grace and moral fortitude, he was also a devoted and loving husband, a supportive and adoring father and a man who always put family first," Poitier's family said in a statement.## "Although he is no longer here with us in this realm, his beautiful soul will continue to guide and inspire us.
