Team India's star opening batsman and the vice-captain in the limited-overs cricket, Rohit Sharma to be honoured with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award — India's highest sporting honour along with 4 other athletes.
Rohit Sharma will only be the 4th cricketer to receive this prestigious award after the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, recently retired Mahendra Singh Dhoni, and the current India captain Virat Kohli. Tendulkar was awarded the Khel Ratna in 1998, Dhoni got it in 2007 and Kohli received in 2018.
Rohit Sharma earned the nomination after the remarkable year of 2019 with the bat. He had his best year in terms of statistics across formats especially in ODIs. He finished the year as the highest run-scorer in the 50-overs cricket, scoring a staggering 1,490 runs in ODIs including seven hundred – the most by any player in the calendar year.
In the World Cup 2019 which was played in England and Wales, Rohit was the highest run-getter with 648 runs in 9 innings. He also registered 5 hundred in the tournament which is a record in the single edition of the World Cup. He was also named the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year (2019)
Apart from Rohit Sharma, wrestler Vinesh Phogat, table tennis player Manika Batra and Hockey player Rani Rampal, and Paralympian M Thangavelu are the other four names who will be conferred with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. Rampal was a late addition to the initial list of four.
This is the first time that the names of 5 athletes have been recommended for the award. In 2016, 4 athletes including shuttler P V Sindhu, gymnast Dipa Karmakar, shooter Jitu Rai, and wrestler Sakshi Malik had received the Khel Ratna award.
The names were decided after the National Sports Awards selection committee met on Tuesday for deciding the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna and other national sports awards.
This year's National Sports Awards ceremony is likely to be held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with all the winners logging in from their respective places to hear their names being announced on August 29.
