Mani Ratnam's 'Ponniyin Selvan - Part 1' Release Date Announced With First Look Posters

Chennai, March 2 - Filmmaker Mani Ratnam's long-awaited, "Ponniyin Selvan - Part 1" gets its release in theaters. The epic historical fiction film based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel of the same name will be hitting worldwide theaters on September 30, in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam, languages.

"PS1" is produced by Mani Ratnam, under his production studio Madras Talkies, along with Allirajah Subaskaran's Lyca Productions. On Wednesday (March 1), producers took to Twitter and announced the release date along with first look posters of the primary cast, which includes, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha Krishnan, Vikram, among others.



The makers released the first look of actor Jayam Ravi, who has essayed the role of Arulmozhivarman or Ponniyin Selvan, later known as the great Raja Raja chola, a Chola emperor.

Actor Vikram who plays the role of Aditya Karikalan, the crown prince and the commander of Northern troops in Sundara Chola's Reign and Arulmozhivarman's elder brother, also gets his first look from the upcoming mega-budgeted film.

Bollywood diva, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who is making her comeback on the big screen, gets her first look poster. She has played the role of Nandini and Mandakini Devi. Nandini, a Pazhuvoor queen, and wife of Periya Pazhuvettraraiyar. Mandakini Devi, also known as Singaara Naachiyaar or Oomai Rani, a deaf and mute mother.

Actor Karthi plays the role of Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan, the brave, adventurous and sarcastic warrior prince of Vannar.

Actress Trisha Krishnan features in the film as Kundavai Pirattiyar, also known as Illaiya Piratti, the Chola princess and daughter of Emperor Sundara Chola.

Set in the 9th century, the film revolves around the early life of Chola Prince Arulmozhi Varman who was later known as the great Chola emperor Raja Raja Chola and was the most powerful King in the South at his time chiefly remembered for reinstating the Chola power and ensuring its supremacy in South East Asia and the Indian Ocean.

The story begins with Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan and narrates his adventurous journey. Most of the characters in the film are introduced through him. Queen Nandini, the wife of Commander of the Chola Army, Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar, moves on a mission to kill Aditya Karikalan and help his husband to ascend the throne. While Arulmozhivarman discovers several secrets about the conspiracy planned by the minsters and Nandini, Vandiyadevan was assigned to bring prince Arulmozhivarman from Sri Lanka, to save the throne.
