Chennai, September 17 - Filmmaker Mani Ratnam is gearing up for the release of his long-awaited epic period action film Ponniyin Selvan: I, which is scheduled to release on September 30 in multiple Indian languages.
The film is boosted by a solid star cast, including Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, and Sobhita Dhulipala, among others in prominent roles. The film tells the story of the early days of Arulmozhivarman, who later became the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I (947 CE – 1014 CE).
The cast of PS1 could have been one of the biggest names in Indian cinema had Mani Ratnam not rejected his request.
During the press meet in Chennai, Mani Ratnam revealed that superstar Rajinikanth had requested to play the supporting role in the movie. However, he rejected Thalaivaa's request as he couldn't have satisfied superstar's huge fanbase by giving him a simple supporting role.
"Ponniyin Selvan: I" is produced by Mani Ratnam and Allirajah Subaskaran under Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions. The film is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel Ponniyin Selvan. The film will be released in two parts, second part will release after 6-9 months of "PS1". It will be the first Tamil movie to be released in IMAX screens.
