Los Angeles, September 14, 2021: Christopher Nolan's next film, which is about World War II scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer, will be distributed by Universal Pictures, confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.
Warner Bros., which has been the home of Nolan's most films, was also in the race but eventually lose to Universal. Since 2002's "Insomnia", all of Nolan's movies except The Prestigue (2006), which was distributed by Disney, and Interstellar (2014), which saw Warners and Paramount splitting up international and domestic rights respectively, have been released by Warner Bros.
While Warner Bros. was also in talks to grab Nolan's next movie, it is learned that Nolan, who is a strong proponent of the theatrical experience, sends his next movie to Universal because an exclusive theatrical release for his next project is of the utmost importance for the filmmaker.
Nolan was one of the filmmakers who criticized Warner Bros' decision to send its 2021 slate day-and-date to HBO Max. "Some of our industry’s biggest filmmakers and most important movie stars went to bed the night before thinking they were working for the greatest movie studio and woke up to find out they were working for the worst streaming service", Nolan had said to THR.
Meanwhile, Nolan has reportedly put forth few demands to Universal Pictures while choosing the studio for his next. He has demanded an exclusive theatrical release for at least 100 days plus, the studio can't release another film 3 weeks before and after his movie. He also asked for total creative control over the film and set a production budget of around $100 million and equal marketing spend while asking 20 percent of first-dollar gross.
Nolan's next movie is a biopic based on J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist who is considered one of the developers of the atom bomb during World War II. Nolan will produce the film alongside his wife and longtime producing partner Emma Thomas for their Syncopy Inc. banner. The movie will start production in the first quarter of 2022.
The "Inception" director's movies have always attracted audiences worldwide, resulted in, his directorial films have grossed more than US$5 billion worldwide. His "The Dark Knight" trilogy made billions at the box office. His last film, Tenet, was an exclusive theatrical release and grossed over $363 million worldwide including $58 million domestically.
