Los Angeles, July 8 - Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise has proved his metal at the age of 60 by delivering the biggest blockbuster of his career in the form of Top Gun Maverick
. Cruise's passion for cinema is clearly visible in "Top Gun 2", which has been hailed as one of the finest sequels ever made in Hollywood history.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the sequel to Cruise's "Top Gun" (1986) is the first billion-dollar grosser of 2022 and the second during the entire covid-19 pandemic at the worldwide box office. The military action drama film has so far grossed $1.12 billion worldwide and currently is the 28th biggest grosser of all time.
"Top Gun 2" is the 50th $1 billion worldwide grosser of all time. Tom Holland's "Spider-Man: No Way Home" was the 49th film to achieve this feat. Interestingly, all 50 films belong to the Hollywood film industry, including 30 films by Disney Studio. The highest-grossing non-English film of all time is "The Battle at Lake Changjin" ($913M) which is a Chinese movie.
James Cameron's Titanic
was the first $1 billion worldwide grosser in March 1998. It took 74 days to reach the milestone. "Top Gun: Maverick", on the other hand, took just 31 days to top the $1 billion mark. Marvel Studios' Avengers: Endgame
, however, is the fastest ever to achieve the milestone as it reached there in just 5 days.
"Top Gun 2" stars Tom Cruise as Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell reprising his role from the original, alongside Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, and Val Kilmer (who also reprises his role). The film follows Maverick confronting his past while training a group of younger TOPGUN graduates, including the son of his deceased best friend.
