Thor: Love and Thunder Secures 5th Biggest MCU Opening of All Time

Los Angeles, July 9 - Chris Hemsworth and Natali Portman's Thor: Love and Thunder's domestic box office opening has once again proved that the critics' reviews hardly matter when it comes to the Marvel movie.

The superhero movie, directed by Taika Waititi, is one of the lowest MCU-rated movies of all time with a critics' score of 68% from 305 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing. However, it seems that the low critics' rating is only for the record book as the movie took a flying start of $29 million from its domestic (North America) Thursday preview screens (which started at 3 pm).



The thundering opening of "Thor 4" is one of the biggest ever for an MCU title. For the record, it is the 5th biggest Thursday start for all MCU films and the second-best of 2022 overall (just behind Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness). It is tracking to earn $150 million in the domestic opening weekend and possibly $300 million worldwide.

The Disney and Marvel movie is a direct sequel to "Thor: Ragnarok" (2017), both were directed by the maverick filmmaker Taika Waititi, and is the fourth entry in the Thor stand-alone franchise. It's also the 29th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The movie marks the return of Natali Portman, after missing out on two previous Thor movies. She is also playing the Mighty Thor this time and going by the people's reactions, she is the highlight of the movie. The cast also includes Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Waititi, and Russell Crowe.
