Mumbai, May 11 - James Cameron's "Avatar: The Way of Water" first teaser trailer was dropped online on May 9 after playing exclusively in theaters across the world with Marvel Studios' "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of the Madness".
The anticipation for the sequel to 2009's film has been high skyrocketing and it was proved when the teaser dropped online. The teaser finished its first 24-hour online window with a massive 148.6 million views, according to Disney and 20th Century (via THR). The viewing numbers include 23 million from China alone.
The 148.6 million views on YouTube and across social media don't include the millions of people watching the teaser on the big screen with the Marvel movie. The online viewing numbers of "Avatar 2" are incredible knowing the fact millions have watched it on the big screen and many more people want it to watch in theaters first.
The massive views count of "Avatar 2" is ahead of all recent Star Wars films, including "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" (112.4 million). The numbers are also ahead of "Black Widow" (116.8 million) and "Incredibles 2" (113.1 million) in the first 24-hours.
The sequel is "set more than a decade after the events of the first film. Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family, the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure".
The cast members Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldaña as Neytiri, Sigourney Weaver as Dr. Grace Augustine, and Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch reprise their roles from the original movie, and big-name newcomers include Vin Diesel and Cameron's Titanic star Kate Winslet.
The movie will debut in theaters on December 16, 2022, in over 100 languages and multiple big-screen formates. In India, it will release in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.
