Box Office: 'Shang-Chi' Beats Pandemic To Become The First $200M Grosser At North America Box Office In Covid Era

Los Angeles, October 2 - Marvel Studios' "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" has done what other Hollywood pics couldn't do in the last 18-months. The Simu Liu-fronted superhero flick has become the first Hollywood film to gross $200M at the domestic box office during the covid-19 pandemic era, a milestone, which is a big win for the theatrical experience.

It took just 4-weeks for the newest addition in the MCU film to hit the milestone at the North American box office, which no one was expecting to achieve except the destiny in these devastating times. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, "Shang-Chi", however, got an exclusive theatrical release unlike other Disney movies which launched simultaneously on the big screen and Disney+ Premier Access during the pandemic.



The big-budget tentpole was set for a big box office outing after it opened with an impressive $8.8 million on Thursday previews. However, since then it only got better and better and set a new Labor Day record by posting a four-day opening of $94.7 million, including $75.4 million for Friday-Sunday.

"Shang-Chi" took the second-best weekend opening of 2021 behind fellow Marvel release "Black Widow" ($80.3 million). Later, it dethroned "Black Widow" to become the top grosser Hollywood movie at the domestic box office at $183.6 million, and now, it becomes the first $200 million film.

"Shang-Chi's" impressive box office performance has been set up by positive reviews, strong word of mouth from audiences, and an A CinemaScore. The movie, starring Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Tony Leung, Fala Chen, and Michelle Yeoh, is currently approaching $370 million worldwide.
