Los Angeles, November 6 - Marvel Studios' next chapter in the MCU - "Eternals" has been poised nicely to go big at the domestic box office. The Chloe Zhao-directed opened to the third-best Thursday previews of $9.5 million since the beginning of the pandemic.
"Eternals" fell short of "Black Widow" ($13.2 million) and "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" ($11.6 million) but it topped "Shang-Chi's" $8.8 million Thursday previews haul. Despite being rated the lowest Marvel film on Rotten Tomatoes, "Eternals" is projected gross $75 million in the 3-day opening weekend.
Internationally, "Eternals" earned an estimated $19.8 million in its first two days from 39 markets. In India, the Marvel pic opened with domestic blockbuster "Sooryavanshi" and still managed to grab the audiences' attention. Despite the tough competition, the superhero film is estimated to gross over $1 million on Friday (Nov. 5).
Among the top international markets, "Eternals" grossed $4.1 million in South Korea, followed by France ($2.6), Mexico ($1.3M), Italy ($1.2M), Australia, and Germany ($1.1M each), while Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Brazil also produced $1 million each. On November 5, Eternals opened to a few other markets, for which, the box office data will be out on Saturday.
"Eternals" represents an important step forward in Marvel's big-screen efforts. The studio is looking to introduce a new lineup of heroes after saying goodbye to fan favorites such as Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man and Chris Evans' Captain America in "Avengers: Endgame", along with Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow.
The film, which centers on a powerful extraterrestrial race of humanoids, is being hailed as a major milestone for inclusion — its legion of costumed heroes includes Marvel's first openly gay character and its first deaf protagonist. It boasts an ensemble cast that includes Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Richard Madden, and Kit Harington.
