Mumbai, May 12 - The blockbuster hit of the year The Kerala Story scored a sensational first-week collection at the domestic box office. The movie is led by a female cast which created an all-time record for an Indian film domestically.

Directed by Sudipto Sen, The Kerala Story scored 81.36 crores net collection, which is the biggest ever opening week box office for a female-centric film, beating Alia Bhatt's "Gangubai Kathiwadi". TKS, however, was helped by the controversy which tempted audiences to watch it in theaters.

As far as this year is concerned, The Kerala Story recorded the 4th biggest first-week collection for a Bollywood movie, behind only "Pathaan", "Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar", and "Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan". In the second week, TKS will look to challenge "Pathaan" which scored 91.50 crores net collection in Hindi.

The Kerala Story stars Adah Sharma alongside Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani, and Siddhi Idnani in the key roles. The plot follows the story of a group of women from Kerala who are converted to Islam and join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
