Mumbai, August 26 - 34 years ago - an actor debuted in a film called "Biwi Ho To Aisi" in a smaller role which did not even get any sort of appreciation but today that actor is known as the biggest superstar of the Hindi film industry. Yes, we are talking about Salman Khan.
Salman Khan shot to fame with Maine Pyar Kiya in 1989 which was his first leading role film and it went on to smash many box office records of that time. The overall business of the film was just second only to legendary all-time blockbuster Sholay with many trade pundits even putting it ahead of Sholay and declaring it the biggest hit since Alam Ara.
The film overall remains the greatest debut by any actor to date as, except Salman Khan, No other star has debuted in an all-time blockbuster film. Remember, we are taking the first leading role film into account. Several debutant films did blockbuster business like Rishi Kapoor in Bobby (1973) or Hrithik Roshan in Kaho Na Pyar Hai (2000) or even Sunny Deol in Betaab (1983) but they were not at the level of Salman Khan's fronted Maine Pyar Kiya.
Maine Pyar Kiya catapulted Salman Khan into the league of the biggest stars of that time and he consolidated his position with many hits, superhits, and even blockbusters like Saajan (1991) and Sanam Bewafa (1991). By the time Salman Khan completed 3 years in the industry, He was already among the highest-paid actors of that era. The next few years saw Salman Khan having a tough time at the box office with a series of box office failures but with Sooraj Barjatya's Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Salman Khan bounced back. Hum Aapke Hain Koun became the first film that crossed the Mount Everest collections of Sholay and that too by around a 400% margin. The film to date remains the greatest box office hit since Sholay and even before Sholay, There were only two films that were as big hits as Hum Aapke Hain Koun. Those were Mughal E Azam (1960) and Mother India (1957).
Salman Khan ruled the roost in the 1990s decade by delivering the maximum number of hits and successful films and also having the biggest hit and grosser of the decade in his repertoire. What makes his achievement even more enviable is the fact that his biggest glories were solo hero starrers in the age of multistarrers.
Salman Khan had possibly the biggest fan following in India at that time but due to some unwanted controversies, His career got nosedived in the 2000s decade. Though he managed to score huge hits here and there like No Entry, Partner, and Wanted - the level of dominance was not like his earlier days of the 1990s and the magnitude of hits was not even close.
In come 2010s - the box office witnessed its greatest run ever. Dabangg in 2010 smashed all records. Bodyguard repeated the same phenomenon in 2011 and Ek Tha Tiger with Dabangg2 took it to another level. Salman Khan became the first and the only star of Indian cinema who delivered 5 back to back blockbusters. The box office dominance continued with huge extraordinary hits like Kick (2014), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), Sultan (2016), and Tiger Zinda Hai (2017). The phase between 2010 to 2017 remains the greatest ever phase by any Indian star with 9 elephantine blockbusters and 5 of them topping the chart of the highest grosser of the year.
From openings to weekend records to long runners. Whether scoring blockbusters with action, masala, comedy, drama, romantic, or any other genre. Be it the highest grosser of the decade or the biggest hit of the decade - Salman Khan has achieved every box office record. Salman Khan is the only star of the Hindi film Industry who has crossed 30 hit films, 15 blockbuster films, and 10 highest-grossing films of the year. He's a superstar with probably the most number of box office records just like Sachin Tendulkar owns the most records in Cricket.
Salman Khan is still the biggest superstar of the Hindi film industry though he has passed his peak of domination days, Even this level is enough for the rest of them to catch up. All hopes from the industry and in general are pinned on Salman Khan now. His next two releases are Bhaijaan and Tiger3 which have been scheduled to be released on 30 December 2022 and 21 April 2023 respectively.
